Jamie Storey (Stockport Golf Club) has been truly devoted to increasing participation (and continued engagement) in youth golf for years – and was nominated for a President’s Award in 2025. This was taken from his nomination.
From his time as head professional of Marple GC to his current role as head professional at Stockport GC he has actively led a push for both youth and ladies golf to great success.
From the participation in the Girls’ Golf Rocks programme to regular Saturday primetime kids’ group lessons (at very cheap prices and flexible terms) he has pushed to increase accessibility beyond the typical take up.
Jamie has worked hard, alongside the Stockport GC committee, to change the more “traditional” attitudes to create an acceptance for a more “lively” club house that encourages families (and noisy young children) to feel welcome.
Jamie leads by example by regularly bringing his young son and family to the club.
Jamie has organised Stockport’s participation in the Golf 6’s competition allowing lots of opportunity for young golfers to experience a more competitive event in a fun atmosphere. The priority has always been on the experience with players picked not solely on ability but also for opportunity to play golf with different partners in an air of respectful competition which he advocates. Good scores are celebrated but also general improvement and fair play.
Jamie, along with his excellent assistant professionals (Dan and Callum), has created a lovely atmosphere at one of the highest regarded (and traditional) courses in the area wherein junior golfers of all abilities feel welcome to attend over the weekend to practice and have fun.
By leading from the top, and with lots of hard work and devotion of his time, Jamie has changed the club’s approach to youth golf without focusing on the “elite” few junior golfers but also pushing for a more relaxed environment to allow kids to grow and develop to hopefully take up a life long hobby by showing them how social the club is beyond just the fairways and greens.
